At the mouth of the Derwent River, the tranquil coastal neighborhood of Sandy Bay is one of Hobart’s most sought-after residential neighborhoods. Sandy beaches, boat-filled piers and a lively arts community offer a change of pace for travelers escaping the bustle of downtown. It’s also a good choice for rented accommodation outside of the central business district.
The best way to explore Sandy Bay is on foot. Wander around the harbor, lined with fishing boats and private yachts; browse the cluster of shops and cafés along Kings Street and Sandy Bay Road; or stroll the waterfront boardwalk between the small riverside beaches. For the most impressive views, hire a yacht or join a boat cruise and admire the shores of Sandy Bay from the water. At night, the Wrest Point Casino, perched on the coast, is the place to be seen—the historic hotel was Tasmania’s first casino.
*Foodies won’t want to miss the Hobart Twilight Markets, held each Friday from October through March at Long Beach, Sandy Bay. *Bring your swimsuit and a picnic—swimming is possible at Long Beach and other beaches in the summer months, and locals often gather for a picnic or BBQ on the beach. *The district offers easy access for wheelchairs and strollers, and the riverside boardwalks from Little Sandy Bay to Long Beach are also accessible.
Sandy Bay is located just south of Battery Point, two miles (three kilometers) from downtown Hobart or an about 10-minute drive or taxi ride. It’s an easy 5-minute walk from Battery Point and numerous buses stop along Sandy Bay Road, which runs through the neighborhood.
The district is liveliest on the weekends, especially in the summer, when everyone seems to head to the beach. Head there in the day to walk along the coast or in evening for a quiet dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants.
