Although most famous for being the source of the Nile River, Lake Victoria also boasts the title of the world’s largest tropical lake. Despite its diverse species, scenic shores, and vital role in local industries, much of the African Great Lake remains off-the-beaten-track, making it the ideal getaway from Uganda’s bustling cities.

Birds, monkey's and bicycles
The short but beautiful boat ride across to the peninsula, the quiet, bird song, butterflies and the monkey's! The cycling was fun, some off the beaten track and into the forest. Thr guide was knowledgeable and clearly loved cycling and nature!

Mountain Biking an Island on Lake Victoria in Uganda, Africa
We boated, we rode, we ate, we loved it! The excursion was a welcome break from the busy bustle of Kampala. Jims was patient and accommodating, fleshing out daily details of island life. Serenada Eco Preserve grounds an added bonus. We will be returning. Thanks Jims!

Unique MUST-DO Active Tourist Activity
Thoroughly enjoyed my mountain bike cycling experience with Francis! It was the perfect adventure for someone who enjoys being active, being outdoors, seeing and interacting with local life, and simply doing some different. I loved loading bikes onto a little boat and riding across beautiful Lake Victoria and becoming immersed in daily life of a small Ugandan farming village. The island residents were very warm with their greetings, and the small children running up close, yelling "hello" excitedly and repeatedly was heavenly. Francis is very fit and provided me a great cycling challenge, which I appreciated and enjoyed. His laid-back, kind personality was very pleasant to be around and allowed me to engage the experience in my own manner. I enjoyed our stop in the commercial area of the village to watch a young man Solomon make a delicious breakfast snack for us to enjoy. This excursion was a highlight for my East Africa holiday. I highly recommend this activity! Sign up quickly!
People Also Ask
Q:Why is Lake Victoria in Africa so special?
A:Lake Victoria is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Africa and the biggest of the African Great Lakes. It spans Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and provides a home to hundreds, if not thousands, of local bird, fish, and mammal species. Plus, Lake Victoria also feeds the Nile River.
Q:When is the best time of year to visit Lake Victoria?
A:Most visitors plan their trips to Lake Victoria during the dry season, which lasts roughly from December to February and then again from June to August. That’s the ideal window for taking a boat tour, however, if you can brave the rainy season, you’ll catch lush landscapes and migratory birds.
Q:What is a typical Lake Victoria boat tour like?
A:There are many options for visiting Lake Victoria by boat. One of the most popular is a 2-hour sunset cruise that lets visitors enjoy the lakeside scenery during the golden hour. Other options include half- or full-day experiences—either on motorized boats or traditional canoes—or fishing excursions.
Q:What wildlife can I see at Lake Victoria?
A:One of the biggest draws in Lake Victoria are its resident hippos. You can also find Nile crocodiles, buffalo, and chimpanzees within Ngamba Island, bordering the massive freshwater lake. The wetlands of Mabamba Bay along the lake’s northern shores are an optimal place to spot some of the area’s 300 bird species.
Q:Can I swim in Africa’s Lake Victoria?
A:Yes, swimming in Lake Victoria is permitted, but only within designated areas. Venture outside those designated areas at your own risk, as the lake is home to crocodiles. Also, make sure to be careful even within those swimming spots because bad weather can blow in quickly, leading to hazardous conditions.
Q:Do I need my own car to visit Lake Victoria?
A:No, Lake Victoria is situated near Entebbe, Uganda’s main international airport, making it a convenient destination for travelers to reach even without their own transportation. You’ll find plenty of day trips and multi-day tours available along with airport shuttle services. It’s also possible to visit the lake independently, too.
