A morning or afternoon at Tobu World Square is a fun side trip and a chance to admire some architectural treasures on a smaller scale. Although “miniature,” most of the models are still quite large, taller than the average person. The theme park is divided up geographically by continent. Tobu World Square is wheelchair-accessible, and guests can borrow wheelchairs free of charge.
There are restaurants and a picnic area on-site—food can’t be taken into the rest of the park.
Nikko is easily accessible by train, bus, or car from Tokyo and other nearby Japanese cities. It’s a popular destination, and many travelers like to stay there for a night or more. Tobu World Square is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from Nikko, and many hotels in the Kinugawa Onsen area arrange direct transfer to the park. Alternatively, take the Nikko-Kinugawa train from Shimo-Imaichi station to Tobu World Square station.
Tobu World Square is open every day of the year—with reduced hours in winter, as the Nikko area can get cold and snowy.
While you’re in Nikko, definitely don’t miss the early-17th-century Toshogu Shrine, part of the Nikko UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by forest and ornately decorated—with intricate carving, rich colors, and lots of gold leaf—the shrine is an atmospheric attraction to visit at any time of the year.
