Wat Khunaram is an active place of worship. Many people come here to pay their respects, receive blessings, and to see the Mummified Monk. It's said that Loung Pordaeng predicted his own death, and requested to be displayed if his body did not decay. It’s easy to visit Wat Khunaram independently, or on tours that typically include stops at other top Koh Samui attractions, such as the Big Buddha Temple, Lad Koh Viewpoint, and Namuang Waterfall.
Remember to dress respectfully and keep your shoulders and knees covered.
Wat Khunaram is free to enter, but donations are accepted.
The mummified remains may not be appropriate for young kids.
Wat Khunaram is located on Route 4169, west of Hua Thanon, southwest of Lamai Beach, and southeast of Nathon Pier in Koh Samui. There’s free parking on-site. It’s easiest to reach by taking a taxi or songthaew public bus. Some Koh Samui sightseeing tours also include a stop at the temple.
The temple is open daily during daylight hours. To see the temple at its most active, when monks are likely to be chanting, visit in the early morning or late afternoon. It shouldn’t take long to walk around the temple. Some visitors combine it with a visit to nearby Grandpa and Grandma Rocks, and Na Muang Waterfall.
Wat Khunaram is located between Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks on Lamai Beach and Na Muang Waterfall. Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks are known as Grandpa and Grandma Rocks due their resemblance to the male and female genitalia. Na Muang Waterfalls are also known as the Purple Waterfall due to the color of the rocks behind the falls, and features two tiers, including an easily accessible lower tier with a natural pool suitable for swimming.
