A leading medical research facility in La Jolla, California, the Salk Institute might be known as much for its unique architecture as for its scientific breakthroughs. Named for Dr. Jonas Salk, the inventor of the polio vaccine, this collection of buildings was designed to have a monumental feel and was inspired by monasteries.
