Set within the grounds of a former sugar plantation and cotton ginnery, the Nevis Heritage Village at Fothergills Estate recreates the living conditions and examines the social history of the different peoples that have lived on Nevis, from the Carib Indians to the present day.
An initiative by the Nevis tourist board, the heritage village includes a Carib-style thatched-roof hut such as a tribal chief might have lived in, containing actual relics including calabash bowls, clay posts, and tribal weapons. There are also wattle and daub huts of the type lived in by plantation slaves, and a post-emancipation gingerbread-style chattel house. These are set within the ruined grounds of the former Fothergills sugar mill.
Alongside these dwellings are the blacksmith’s shop, rum shop, and shoemaker’s shop, and a number of backyard gardens filled with local plants and flowers. For anyone interested in the history of the Caribbean islands and how people lived in the past, it’s well worth a visit.
Entry to the heritage village is by paid ticket.
Consider joining a guided tour for additional information about each of the dwellings.
Make time to visit the herb garden, where you can see traditional medicinal plants.
Nevisian Heritage Village is located in Gingerland, southeast of the island, around 15 minutes by car from the capital, Charlestown. Public transport options are limited, so consider visiting by car or booking a tour with transport included.
For a relaxing afternoon enjoying some natural beauty, visit the Botanical Gardens of Nevis. See colorful orchids, water lilies, and stands of towering bamboo set within pleasant grounds dotted with fountains and pools. There’s also a rain forest conservatory that’s home to enormous tropical plants and a population of parrots.
