Little India

George Town, Penang, 10450

The Basics

While it only spreads across three main streets, Little India punches above its relatively small size in terms of interest. It’s home to two of the most significant Indian sites in Penang: the Nagore Darhah Sheriff, the oldest Islamic shrine in the state, and the colorful, multi-tiered Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Penang’s oldest Hindu temple.

Market stalls around the temple burn fragrant incense and sell garlands of flowers. Restaurants serve tasty South Indian platters or, better yet, banana leaf meals. Walking tours, cycle tours, trishaw tours, and food tours are all popular ways of visiting the neighborhood.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The shopping is especially good in Little India: spices, silk clothing (especially saris), and gold jewelry are some of the highlights.
  • Bargain when shopping for clothing or other items, but keep the encounter good-natured and respectful.
  • If you’re looking for a quick snack rather than a sit-down meal, grab a samosa or a roti Bengali from a pushcart stall.

How to Get There

Though there aren’t firm boundaries around the neighborhood, Little India is centered on Queen Street, Chulia Street, and Market Street. The clan jetties are to the southeast, and Armenian Street to the south. Many people like to walk around Little India and George Town, but the heat (and constant traffic dodging) can get oppressive, so trishaw tours are a good alternative. Hop-on hop-off buses also stop in the area.

When to Get There

Little India is especially lively during Hindu and South Indian festivals, especially Deepavali (October-November), Navaratri (September-October), and Thaipusam (January-February). The temple is most lively at dawn and dusk. Early morning is a cooler, quieter time to stroll through the neighborhood, while the markets and restaurants liven up in the evening.

George Town’s Street Art

George Town is renowned for its street art, which can be found hidden down alleyways and on the sides of restaurants and shops throughout town. A great way to see the art, including murals and wrought-iron sculptures, is just to wander and see what you can find. Guided tours are also offered, and free maps marking the art are available from information counters and hotels.
