Riven with sea inlets and lagoons populated by pink flamingos, lush North Caicos is the Turks and Caicos’s second-largest island and lies about 12 miles (19 kilometers) from its eastern neighbor, Providenciales. Dotted with small settlements and former plantations, the quiet island boasts long sandy beaches with coral reefs for swimming and snorkeling.
We had a great time with Charles getting to see all the ins and outs of North and Middle caicos.
Our trip started with a very fast ferry over from Provo, then we traveled by air conditioned van from community to community, getting to know the beautiful green island. Charles really knows the area, and his love and admiration for the islands really added to the tour.
We ended our tour at mudjin harbor, which may be one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The surf was too rough to get in the water, but it was incredible!
This was a great trip that kind of involved more sites than the description mentions. It was a great combination of natural sites and historic sites (or cultural context). Some we drove by or only briefly stopped at.
Yet, it was horribly hot. I think that’s more due to the unusual heat wave of 2023, as I like tropical heat and found the day hot. This also led to bugs irritating any human found. Hopefully the bugs were extra bad during this heat wave and it isn’t necessarily this bad normally. Thankfully, the bugs were only a problem at the beginning and were fine the rest of the day.
The only negative thing that happened that’s in their control is that the van was too crowded. We could have booked a different day, happily, if only we knew. I wish they asked.
The places we visited were amazing. I didn’t find anything as interesting on Provenciales, so I’m super happy we did this day trip.
Our guide Betty was wonderful. Friendly and knowledgeable and she knew just about everyone on the islands :)
The tour included visits to the ruins of a Plantation, an amazing cave, Flamingo Cove, and a delicious lunch, after which we climbed down steep steps through another cave, and emerged at a pristine beach surrounded by rugged cliffs. Nice to explore a different side of the TCI’s!
Very nice tour when you need something other than the beach for a day
This was a very nice tour when you want to do something a little bit different than the beach. Betty was a great guide and we saw an amazing plantation, several caves and then an amazing section of the north shore on Middle Caicos that we didn’t want to leave. We also stoped to view the flamingos and the tour provided binoculars to see them. My 15 year old son and 12 year old daughter both really enjoyed it late in the week after we had spent a lot of time at the beach.
We enjoyed our tour and loved Betty the guide. However, I must caution participants (especially older ones) that the bat cave darkly descended on rock stairs with no rail. I took a very hard fall. Betty provided assistance and luckily it was not serious. There is no signage or railing! I will contact the National Trust as well to make my comments but please caution people.
