The basics

Spanning 25 acres (10 hectares), May Fourth Square is divided into three parts, including a coastal park where the May Wind sculpture sits. Paths and fountains wind their way around the square, which also features expansive manicured lawn areas. It’s a popular place for a stroll, to fly a kite, or to enjoy the open space and views. Well connected by public transport, it’s easy to visit the square independently, and to combine it with a walk along the seaside promenade to the Olympic Sailing Center or nearby beaches.

How to get there

The square is located on Donghai West Road, in the Shinan central business district of Qingdao. Take the metro (line 1 or 2) to May Fourth Square Station. Numerous buses also stop nearby, including the sightseeing tourist bus line 1. The square is also within walking distance of the Olympic Sailing Center.

When to get there

May Fourth Square is open 24 hours a day. It’s especially popular and lovely to view at night, when nearby buildings are all lit up. A synchronized light show is held from time to time (around 8pm). It can get incredibly packed with people. Visit during the early morning or mid week to avoid the largest crowds.

Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center

Located east of May Fourth Square, and offering great views of the square from across the bay, the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center was the site of the sailing regatta in the 2008 Olympic Games. Today, you can still see the Olympic torch and flags at the site, which is also home to an Olympic Sailing Museum, and a marina and yacht club where boat rentals are available.
