Itaparica Island, the largest island in Brazil’s Bay of All Saints, is a popular day trip option from Salvador da Bahia. The tropical town of Mar Grande is home to bustling markets, shopping, and plenty of restaurants. Those looking for a more traditional island getaway should head to the north coast, where the beaches are scenic and the ocean views spectacular. Excursions to the island by schooner typically include free time on the island, lunch, and live samba music and caipirinhas on the way back to the mainland. Visitors can also opt for an island-hopping excursion that combines a visit to Itaparica Island with a stop at nearby Ilha dos Frades.
Itaparica Island is located about six miles (10 km) from the city of Salvador. It is accessible via a one-hour ferry. Smaller boats leave from Mercado Modelo and larger ships can be found in Bom Despacho.
While the weather on the island tends to be hot and humid throughout the year, it’s best to visit during the dry season (September to January). June and August tend to be the wettest months in the region.
Visitors will find no shortage of sandy beaches on this island. Cacha Pregos Beach ranks among the most remote on the island, while the calm, shallow waters of Ponta de Areia Beach make it an excellent option for swimming. Those interesting in snorkeling or scuba diving should head to Manguinhos.
