The Toyohira River stretches for 45 miles (72 kilometers) through the Japanese island prefecture of Hokkaido, from Mt. Oizari (Oizaridake) through Jozankei to Sapporo before combining with the Ishikari River and emptying into Ishikari bay. In Sapporo, the river’s banks are lined with pathways, which are popular with joggers and walkers.
The river is lined with popular fishing spots and also attracts canoers and white-water rafters—several Sapporo-based tour operators offer guided rafting and canoeing trips. About an hour from Sapporo, you'll find Jozankei Onsen in Shikotsu-Toya National Park between the river’s high cliffs; it's Hokkaido’s largest hot spring town and home to around 20 ryokan (traditional Japanese inns). The Sapporo Salmon Museum, a 25-minute drive from Sapporo's city center, provides insights into the river's ecology.
In Sapporo, the river’s pathways are paved.
Traveling families will find kid-friendly attractions, including slides and climbing frames, at the Toyohira River Water Garden.
Several ryokan in Jozankei offer day visitors admission to their onsen for a small fee.
The Toyohira River runs along the eastern side of Sapporo Station and passes under the Toyohira Bridge. The closest station to Toyohira River is Nakajimakoen Station on the green Namboku line. From here it is a 5-minute walk east. Jozankei Onsen is easy to reach by bus from Sapporo Station Bus Terminal or Makomanai Station.
The Toyohira River is an attractive destination year-round. In summer, take advantage of the warm weather and long daylight hours to stroll along the river banks. In the fall, watch salmon swimming upriver and the Sapporo Marathon, which runs along the river’s banks in October. Jozankei Onsen is particularly popular in winter and white-water rafting is best in spring.
In summer the Toyohira River is the setting for colorful festivals including the Doshin/UHB Fireworks (also known as Toyohira Fireworks). Held in late July for more than 50 years, the popular event sees around 4,000 fireworks lighting up the night sky over Sapporo.
