Sapporo trip ideas
For the freshest seafood, head to the Minato seafood market located next to the Tomakomai fishing port. Be sure to sample the local surf clam, renowned for its flavor and texture. Take in panoramic city views at the Midorigaoka Park Observation Tower, and see the Russian space station Mir at the Tomakomai City Science Center. Active travelers can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including horseback riding, at Northern Horse Park; go bird-watching at Lake Utonai, home to over 250 species of birds; or climb the steep slopes of Mt. Tarumae, an active volcano. Depending on the season, relax with a round of golf or go ice skating.
Tomakomai is ideal for seafood fans and nature lovers.
The city generally sees less snow than the rest of Hokkaido, but you should still dress for cold weather in the winter.
Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes if you plan to hike Mt. Tarumae.
Tomakomai is located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Sapporo and about 13 miles (21 kilometers) south of New Chitose Airport. Tomakomai can be reached by train on the JR Muroran, Hidaka, and Chitose line. It’s also possible to reach Tomakomai by long-distance ferry from Honshu, the main island of Japan.
Tomakomai can be visited year-round. Visit in the winter to enjoy winter sports, and visit spring to fall to enjoy one of its many golf courses. February brings the Tomakomai Skate Festival, and the Tomakomai Port Festival is held in summer.
Located northeast of Tomakomai, Northern Horse Park is a 123.5-acre (50-hectare) horse-themed park. In addition to horseback riding, activities include mini-golf, bicycling, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snow rafting. The park also puts on pony shows and jumping and dressage competitions.
