Latin Bridge (Latinska Ćuprija)

Obala Kulina Bana bb, Sarajevo, 71000

The basics

As the setting for one of the city’s most infamous historical events, you better believe that the Latin Bridge is part of nearly every walking tour of Sarajevo. Even if history isn’t an interest of yours, walk out onto this Ottoman-era pedestrian bridge even if for a few minutes to admire the views along Sarajevo’s river. Continue to the Museum of Sarajevo 1878–1918 on the corner opposite the bridge’s northern end if you really want to dive into this pivotal point in history.

Amazing Walking Tour of Sarajevo
We had a fantastic time on the walking tour with Arna! Her knowledge of Sarajevo was impressive, and she went above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable. We also appreciated how she even shared her hat and gloves when my wife got cold. Exploring the city with a local guide who knows so much and explains everything well truly enhanced our appreciation for Sarajevo. Highly recommend this tour if you’re in the city!

Things to know before you go

  • There are traffic lights right at the bridge for pedestrians to cross at when coming/going from the Old Town.

  • The Latin Bridge is a nearly-level pedestrian bridge with no barriers to access for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers.

  • If you’re joining a walking tour through the Old Town, wear comfortable shoes and a hat for the sun.

  • There is very little information presented at the bridge about its history, so bring a guidebook or audio guide if you want to learn about it.

How to get there

With Sarajevo Old Town to its immediate north and busy Bascarsija only a few streets away, walking to the Latin Bridge will work for many visitors. When coming from elsewhere in the city, simply take the number 3 tram to the Latinska ćuprija stop right by the bridge which is there for that exact purpose. It’s important to know that trams only travel in one direction on this part of the route.

When to get there

Given the chance, it’s best to visit the Latin Bridge twice if you can; once during the day and once in the evening to see how the riverfront scenery changes when illuminated at night. Expect walking tours to regularly come through during the mid- to late-morning, but pick your moment and it shouldn’t be too crowded.

Other historical memorials in Sarajevo

The site of Franz Ferdinand’s assassination isn’t the only historical landmark or memorial tied in Sarajevo, even if it is the most famous. The Eternal Flame solemnly honors those who died in World War II, while Kovači Cemetery beautifully commemorates the soldiers who died during the Bosnian War. Walk around the center of Sarajevo and you’ll even spot red-colored scars on the ground (known as Sarajevo Roses) where mortar impact marks have been turned into memorials using red resin.
