With surrounding landmarks such as the baroque-style Roman Catholic Church (Biserica Romano Catolica) and the 18th-century Brukenthal Palace, this square is a focal point for travelers in the city. Walking tours of Sibiu typically make stops here as well as at the two other important historic squares in the old town: Piaţa Mică (Small Square) and Piaţa Huet. Travelers on multi-day tours of Transylvania often see the square during stopovers in Sibiu, before continuing on to other attractions in the region, such as Bran Castle (also known as Dracula’s Castle), Peles Castle, Brașov, and Sighișoara.
Big Square is situated in the center of Sibiu’s old town. The square is about a 15-minute walk from Sibiu train station, which offers regular connections to Brașov.
The square is at its buzziest in summer, when visitors can take advantage of the people-watching opportunities afforded by outdoor seating at square-side restaurants. The square also hosts a seasonal Christmas market, with stalls selling holiday decorations, handmade crafts, and mulled wine.
The square is surrounded by historic buildings, some of which are open to the public. Brukenthal Palace holds a collection of European art that includes works from Van Eyck, Titian, and Rubens, as well as period furnishings, chandeliers, and antiques. Visitors can also climb the stairs of the Council Tower, which affords views out over Sibiu, and check out the stained glass and painted interior of the Roman Catholic Church.
