The Basics
With its blend of geology, ecology, history, and art, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda offers something for everyone. Whether you want to check out a diorama of the island's volcanic origins, look at fish fossils, see native pottery, or learn about its British colonization, the museum's exhibits offer a comprehensive look at Antigua and Barbuda. Guided walking tours of St. John's typically include a stop at the museum. There is also an on-site gift shop selling jewelry and pottery from local artists, framed maps, books, and more.
A Piece of Antigua
The walking tour was a big highlight of my solo trip to Antigua. My tour guide, Lloyd was excellent. He was my tour guide the day before to Shirley Heights.
Along the tour we stopped at St. John’s Cathedral and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. Lloyd and the staff at both stops were so welcoming and knowledge about Antigua’s history. As a middle school social studies teacher, I was thoroughly engaged and grateful to learn about the island’s beautiful culture. We made our way to Cutie’s restaurant in Redcliffe Quay. The Antigua Sampler and wrap that I had were AMAZING. It allowed me to taste a small piece of Antigua. Next, I was able to purchase some souvenirs from both Redcliffe Quay and Hermitage Quay to take home with me.
Lloyd made the tour extremely memorable. I was short on time but we were able to drive past an Antiguan cricket legend’s house and pass through a few neighborhoods on the way back to my hotel.
Next time, I’ll definitely check out the vegetable market and other restaurants recommended by Lloyd. Antigua was a treat and this tour is a great place to start or end your vacation. I can’t wait to go back!

Things to Know Before You Go
- Two railway engines are on display in front of the museum.
- A wheelchair ramp is located at the Long Street entrance.
- There is a nominal entrance fee to the museum.
How to Get There
The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is located in the center of town, just a few minutes’ walk from the cruise ship dock. St. John’s two main bus stations, the West bus station located opposite the public market, and the East bus station on Independence Avenue are within easy walking distance of the museum. And it is about a 20-minute drive from the airport.
When to Get There
The museum is open Monday–Saturday, 8:30am–4:30pm, and is closed on Sundays. Peak tourist season occurs from December to February in Antigua, so you’ll likely encounter the biggest crowds then. Also, Antigua’s Carnival takes place from late July to early August and draws large groups of both locals and visitors.
St. John's Anglican Cathedral
Located a few blocks away from the museum, St. John's Anglican Cathedral is another historical attraction, known for its impressive architecture including an iron fence, stained-glass windows, and two towers with cupolas. Bronze statues of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Divine, whom the church was named after, stand guard outside.
