Windhoek trip ideas
Located on the outskirts of Windhoek, visitors come to Katutura to learn about the community’s history and the culture of its residents. At Oshetu Community Market on the corner of Shanghai Street and LLcky Ipinge Street, you can try local street food including kapana (spicy barbecue) and dried, crispy mopane worms. Travelers often visit with a local tour guide who can share knowledge about the region’s complex past—this also helps you visit in a respectful way, and ensure that the community can profit from tourism.
Katutura is a largely residential community, so remain respectful as you explore.
Always ask before you take photos of anyone.
Bring cash to pay for food and local artwork, as you’re unlikely to find card readers.
From the Windhoek Railway Station, it’s a 12-minute drive via the B1. If you don’t have your own car, or if you’d rather not leave it in Katutura, flag a taxi—they’re affordable and easy to find. Just make sure you agree on a rate first. Otherwise you can opt for a tour with included transport so you can drive through Katutura.
Shops and businesses are often closed on Sunday, so opt for a morning weekday visit. There isn’t much shade in Katutura, so it’s best to visit before the heat peaks in the afternoon—even in the winter months of June and July, the daytime tends to stay warm and dry.
Katutura Community Arts Centre is located on Bondel Road, near the Independence Arena. Although opening times vary, the Centre hosts workshops and exhibits from local artists, giving visitors the chance to learn about the Namibian art scene. There are also several schools and community initiatives near the Centre, showing off Katutura’s commitment to its people and their futures.
