3 Days in Colorado Springs for Foodies

Curated by Jacqueline Kehoea travel writer with family ties to Colorado.

If you had asked me years ago what foodies should do in Colorado Springs, I would’ve said, “Head to Denver.” I would never make that same suggestion now. The Springs has come into its own as a bastion of good taste. With a little bit of Americana and a little bit of fine dining—plus a Mountain West flair—Colorado’s second-largest city is now a great place to head for a food-focused trip. With three days, you’ll have more than enough time to get in some wild views and wild brews, enjoy some traditional Colorado plates, and more. Here’s what to do.

Wear layers no matter what season it is—when the sun goes down, the temperature changes quickly.

If you only have time for one thing, spend some time eating your way through downtown.

Day 1

The first place any visitor should start is the Garden of the Gods. You can see this free national natural landmark on a Jeep or e-bike tour or on foot. There’s also surprisingly good food at the onsite Garden of the Gods Market and Cafe; though if you want a new adventure for lunch, try the old-school favorite Green Line Grill for burgers.

In the evening, head downtown for a food tour. Follow your nose to local spots like the Rabbit Hole or book a tour that includes locals’ favorite spots. Most tours include a pint or two of Colorado’s best brews as well.

Day 2

On day 2, grab breakfast at King’s Chef Diner—it’s located in a purple castle, so obviously it’s a can’t-miss spot. From there, work off your meal on a walking tour and get to know this surprisingly historic city. You could also tour the Broadmoor, a 5,000-acre resort home to Colorado’s only AAA Five Diamond restaurant, the Penrose Room.

In the evening, your could turn dinner into a murder mystery or you can enjoy a classic spot like the Pepper Tree Restaurant, which boasts fantastic skyline views of downtown. Afterwards, book a cocktail tour to see the fizzier side of this eclectic city.

Day 3

After breaking your fast at Urban Egg or the Denver Biscuit Company, add a little adventure to your foodie-based itinerary with a little falconry. After learning all about the sport and working up an appetite with the majestic creatures, make a beeline for lunch at retro Shuga’s.

For your final adventure, enjoy a Colorado Springs’ brewery tour. Many breweries also offer small plates—think carnitas tacos, sausage kebabs—so each stop is a two-fer. Downtown has lots of worthwhile spots, and a tour can help you narrow them down to the best of the best.
