3 Days in Destin for Foodies

Curated by Nick Dauka former Panhandle resident.

Destin has a delicious location. Though it’s not the only Floridian city on the Gulf of Mexico, its place on the Panhandle gives it unique regional influences. Amazing seafood is a given, though with the neighboring states of Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana not far away, you should expect a mix of Southern-style flavors.

When you’re visiting Destin, you’ll want to spend as much time on the water as possible. Don’t be hesitant to make multiple trips to Crab Island, as floating restaurants are the norm at this sandbar. When not in the water, waterside dining both on the Gulf and on the Bay is always a good option. Spend three days enjoying all of the beachy activities without missing out on the great local grub.

Find ways to cool down wherever possible when enjoying this warm, sunny destination.

If you only have time for one thing, make it Crab Island’s floating restaurants.

Day 1

Wake up in Destin and start the morning with a local favorite, The Pancakery. After an omelet or eponymous pancake, discover seafood shacks along the water while on a sightseeing cruise.

Sunsets are certainly one of the most eventful times of the day in Destin. You’ll notice that the beach and boardwalk get crowded as the sun bids the sky farewell, so consider a sunset cruise. When you return, grab dinner wherever you please—Southern-style seafood and oysters are never a bad option at Boshamps.

Day 2

Day two is all about enjoying not only what you eat, but where you eat. Join the hundreds of locals and dozens of boats at Crab Island. While you're on the water, you'll visit floating restaurants that cook up grub for purchase and you can BYOB.

The only way to top seeing the sunset from the water is by viewing it over dinner on a secluded island. Make reservations with a special someone for this sunset island dinner date in neighboring Fort Walton Beach.

Day 3

Feel like rustling up your own grub on your last day in Destin? Spend a few hours on the Gulf of Mexico fishing for king mackerel, group, snapper, and other fish of the sea on a private charter boat.

If somehow you’ve had enough fun in the sun, enjoy an early dinner and pre-show drinks at McGuire’s Irish Pub, and then fill the rest of your evening with a little magic at Okaloosa Island Theater’s Maximum Magic show.
