3 Days in Fort Myers for Families

Curated by Nick Dauka travel writer based in Florida.

Fort Myers fits the definition of a “family Florida vacation” to a tee. Southwest Florida is its own special slice of paradise. You’ll find both riverside relaxation and beachside bliss without venturing far from your hotel. Nearby islands of Sanibel, Captiva, and Estero Island show off a slow-paced lifestyle with lots of appeal.

Don’t worry, the kids will have plenty of fun. With so much shoreline, you’d better believe that there are ample activities to get their energy out. Skimboarding, dolphin viewing, fishing, kayaking, and digging for seashells are just a few of the ways you’ll spend time together for three days in Fort Myers.

Expect year-round sunshine with thunderstorms in hurricane season (generally June–Nov.).

If you only have time for one thing, make it a dolphin viewing cruise.

Day 1

You’ll feel the warm sun the minute you arrive in Fort Myers, so why not cool down with a dive into the water? A guided snorkeling tour and a little time on an isolated island will help you and the kids splash into the Southwest Florida lifestyle.

Instead of booking another tour, let the kids play at their pace on the beach. Renting a Jet Ski is a great way to sightsee from the water while giving the little ones a thrilling ride.

Day 2

Day two is for taking the family to a national park. Take a guided safari to the Everglades and discover what lurks in Florida’s wetlands. A boat cruise, wildlife drive, and nature walk will leave the kids captivated.

After such a fun trip out into the swamp, take it easy back at the hotel. Rent a bicycle and ride around the riverside or even down to Fort Myers Beach for a sunset picnic at Bowditch Point Park.

Day 3

On your final day, visit Cape Coral across the river from Fort Myers. Explore its many canals and stumble upon interesting sites such as ecological preserves as you complete a family-friendly scavenger hunt.

Don't leave without letting the kids get a glimpse of the playful bottlenose dolphins that call this coast home. Board a boat one final time for a sunset dolphin cruise before heading home with plenty of memories to cherish.
