1 Day in Kigali for First Timers

Curated by Helen ShepherdSouth Londoner on the loose in Switzerland.

All too often, Rwanda’s vibrant capital is defined by the tragedy of the 1994 genocide. With 24 hours in the city, it’s easy to widen your perspective, and gain a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s rich heritage and modern culture. Here’s how.

Morning

Begin your visit with a city tour, for an overview of Kigali’s highlights. To navigate the city’s many hills with ease, take advantage of tours that offer round-trip transport. Immerse yourself in the capital’s ambience as you visit local markets, cafés, and landmarks, opting for a small-group or private tour to receive personalized recommendations and translations where necessary.

Afternoon

Taking a break from the bustling city center, head out on a tour of Kigali’s suburbs. Spend your afternoon exploring a working factory for insight into Kigali’s modern industries, or engage with Rwanda’s recent history at one of the moving national genocide memorials. Many tours stop by the Kigali Genocide Memorial; others include the Nyamata and Ntarama memorials.

Night

After a busy day, unwind with dinner and drinks in the high-end Nyarutarama district. Or, dive into Kigali’s club and bar culture in Kimihurura or Nyamirambo, two vibrant neighborhoods popular with locals and travelers alike.
