2 Days in Kigali for First Timers

Curated by Helen ShepherdSouth Londoner on the loose in Switzerland.

Kigali’s culture, history, and infrastructure provide plenty for travelers to see and do in the vibrant city, but knowing where to start can be tricky. Here are a few ways to get the most out of two days in the Rwandan capital.

Day 1: Morning

Jump straight into sightseeing on a city tour, benefiting from included transport to traverse the hilly capital with ease. Private and small-group tours offer more personalized insight into Kigali’s historic landmarks and cultural hot spots, allowing you to leave the cumbersome guidebook at home.

Day 1: Afternoon

Several city tours include lunch, as well as entry to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Otherwise, head out on a round-trip tour to discover Kigali’s more distant attractions with ease. Visit multiple national memorials for insight into the 1994 genocide, or learn more about the country’s modern industries at a working factory.

Day 1: Night

Back in town, grab a brochette dinner for a taste of authentic Kigali. Then, jump on a moto and head into a lively suburb such as Nyamirambo or Remera to drink and dance the night away among Kigali locals.

Day 2: Morning and Afternoon

Begin your day with a glass of milk and a banana for a quintessential Kigali breakfast, then venture beyond the city limits to widen your perspective of Rwanda. Tours that include round-trip transport provide hassle-free access to a range of highlights. Nature lovers can visit the African Great Lake Kivu, trek among endangered gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, or search for the “Big Five” animals in Akagera National Park. If cultural sightseeing is more your thing, take advantage of tours that include village visits, traditional crafts, and rural experiences.

Day 2: Night

Wind down after a busy day with a sunset stroll around Nyarutarama Lake, listening for the dusk chorus of native birds. Then, enjoy an evening of fine wine and dining in one of the neighborhood’s upscale eateries.
