3 Days in Liverpool for Families
I’ve been visiting Liverpool regularly for more than two decades, but since becoming a parent I’ve discovered a whole new side of the city. Voted as one of the friendliest cities in the UK, Liverpool is a fantastic destination for families, with myriad museums, vast green spaces, and eclectic cuisine offering plenty to keep the whole squad happy. From stadium tours and river boat cruises to ghost walks and music making, here’s my surefire recipe for three days of kid-friendly fun in the UK’s northwestern gem.
It can get cold on the Mersey, so layer up.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a visit to the Merseyside Maritime Museum—big ships tend to be a hit with visitors of every age.
Taking in Liverpool’s many sights with little ones in tow can be tricky, as there’s a fair bit of ground to cover. Hop-on hop-off bus tours offer an overview of the city’s main highlights without too much walking and option to disembark at points of interest. Family-friendly attractions include Liverpool Cathedral and the Maritime Museum on the Royal Albert Dock.
In the afternoon, board a colorful Mersey ferries from the Pier Head terminal to see views of the riverfront in a kid-friendly way, hopping off at Woodside Ferry Terminal for access to the family favorite U-Boat Story attraction.
Football fans will enjoy a tour of the legendary Anfield Stadium though the interior isn’t stroller friendly and baby changing facilities are limited. If your wee one prefers music to football, try the British Music Experience with plenty of interactive exhibits, plus baby changing facilities and stroller-friendly walkways.
After a morning indoors, it’s time for the kids to run around. Try a scavenger tour, which involves teamwork, problem solving, and is fully private. If you need a break from the city center, Sefton Park has a playground, boating lake, and enough lawn for a kickabout away from any crowds.
British pub culture doesn’t just cater to grown-ups. Here, kids are welcome too, with many pubs offering children’s menus and coloring activities. On your last day, treat the family to a Liverpudlian pub lunch, sampling authentic scouse or tucking in to a classic roast—with a pint of Liverpudlian craft beer for the adults.
Make your final night memorable on a ghost walking tour of Liverpool’s Georgian District. Immersive theatrics make this a great option for older kids. Be aware that the creepy content isn’t advised for under 8.
