2 Days in Plitvice Lakes National Park for First Timers

Curated by Amiee Maxwellwho loves to write about obscure places and extraordinary people.

With two full days in Plitvice Lakes National Park, you’ll have an entire day to explore the Lower Lakes and another day to take in the Upper Lakes. Here’s what you need to know to make the most of two days in Plitvice Lakes.

Day 1: Morning

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Croatia’s top attractions so you’ll want to get started first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds; book admission tickets in advance to save time at the gate. Follow signposted trails and don’t miss the route to the Veliki Slap, the largest waterfall in the park.

Day 1: Afternoon

If you follow the Lower Lakes trails you’ll eventually end up at Lake Kozjak where you can browse the gift shops, grab lunch, and rest your legs at the lakeside picnic area. Return via the Supljara Cave trail, which leads to a panoramic viewpoint of the Lower Lakes region. Most tours follow this route and ensure you don’t waste time getting lost.

Day 1: Night

Head back to the Veliki Slap in the evening and look for a small path on the left before you reach the waterfall; this path leads to a viewpoint overlooking the waterfalls and is one of the best spots to watch the sunset over the park.

Day 2: Morning

Spend your second day exploring the trails in the Upper Lakes which tend to be less crowded than the Lower Lakes. Its still recommended to start early in order to beat the heat. Guarantee you don’t miss the Prstaci waterfalls and the more remote Ciganovic Lake by opting for a hiking tour.

Day 2: Afternoon

Swimming and boating is prohibited in Plitvice Lakes National Park so after two days of admiring emerald pools, you’ll be longing to swim. Head to nearby Rastoke for a kayaking or rafting trip on the Mrežnica River, and see historic water mills while you’re at it.

Day 2: Night

Splurge on a traditional Croatian dinner in Rastoke or head back to the park to enjoy the sunset from your favorite viewpoint. Occasional night tours are offered in the park and provide a unique evening perspective.
