3 Days in Southampton for First Timers

Curated by Zoë Smitha Brit with family ties to this southern port city.

Southampton is full of surprises. Majestic medieval city walls and grand stone towers hug the modern shopping center. A rich maritime history underpins its reputation as one of Europe’s modern cruise capitals. And native ponies run wild in acres of protected forest that's just minutes from the city.

Each time I visit—which is often as my brother lives nearby—I find myself uncovering a new spot or a hidden corner and I'm reminded that there’s so much more to this port city than just a cruise stopover. If you’re ready to explore Southampton beyond the cruise port, this 3-day itinerary is a good place to start.

Coastal England's weather is notoriously changeable—dress in layers.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a walk around the old medieval city walls.

Day 1

Kick off your first day with a walking tour of Southampton’s picturesque historic center. Trace part of the old town walls, which date back to Norman times. Then admire the timber-framed Tudor House, the city’s oldest building, and Holyrood Church. Finally, stroll around East Park.

Bar Street—the heart of Southampton’s cultural quarter—is lined with shops, museums, and restaurants. It’s easy to get around on foot, so spend the afternoon browsing the shops along the high street and in the huge Westquay shopping center. A short walk away, Halladays Tea Room is good for a traditional English afternoon tea.

Day 2

Southampton’s maritime heritage is the focus of SeaCity Museum, where you can learn about the RMS Titanic, which left from Southampton on its maiden voyage. Join a guided walking tour to explore the quay, the Mayflower Memorial, and other sites relating to the city’s seafaring history.

The redeveloped Ocean Village sits at the mouth of the River Itchen affording views across Southampton port. Set sail on a cruise along the Solent, enjoying views to the Isle of Wight. The marina's waterfront bars and restaurants are popular for dinner or drinks. Stay until sunset to spot gigantic cruise liners.

Day 3

If you can only take one day trip from Southampton, make it a tour of England’s most iconic prehistoric site—Stonehenge. The enigmatic stone circle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is in the heart of the idyllic Wiltshire countryside. Best of all, it’s less than an hour’s drive from Southampton.

Combine your Stonehenge tour with a visit to another UNESCO site, Bath. Known for its striking Georgian architecture, ancient Roman baths, and Gothic abbey, the historic city is one of England’s most photogenic. Join a walking tour and see Pulteney Bridge, River Avon waterfront, the Royal Crescent, and Jane Austen Centre.
