3 Days in Stratford-upon-Avon for Foodies
This Shakesperian market town has all the Elizabethan charm you could want. From a 550-year-old local pub with a thatched roof intact to modern British restaurants, there’s a lot of delicious food to eat, too.
Follow your nose to artisanal bakeries and chocolate shops, or learn something new—or very, very old—from a local chef. Whenever I’m in town, I love to enjoy the atmosphere by the riverside with a good sandwich, watching the boats sail by. I do also love to nip into a pub or two for a pint. This is how I’d spend three days in Stratford-upon-Avon.
It’s usually pleasant, but this is England so bring an umbrella.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a meal at the Michelin-starred Salt.
Start your trip to Stratford in typically genteel fashion by strolling through the historic shopping streets in the center of town. You'll wend your way amongst Elizabethan buildings that lean eccentrically on quaintly crooked streets. Procure a GoFreeCard for deals on food and drink at spots all over town.
In the afternoon, get to know Shakespeare more intimately by visiting the Bard's favorite haunts around Stratford-upon-Avon. Then, learn more about food in Shakespeare’s day in a cooking class, or simply head to a tavern for an ale and a slap-up meal.
One of the first things I like to do when I'm in Stratford-upon-Avon is head to the Boston Tea Party for coffee and breakfast. Fuelled up and ready to go, I head off on a long walk around the town’s parks and along the river—try an audio tour to make the most of it.
Gin fans will love the Shakespeare Distillery—visit for a tour and to try some of its unique spirits. If you’re more into your daily bread, try a sourdough class with a local baker, or visit Mor Bakery for sourdough loaves (or pizza) you can eat straight away.
On your final day in Stratford-upon-Avon, make time for one of the town’s highly rated restaurants. Salt from chef Paul Foster is a well-regarded local eatery and one of my favorites.
Café Cocktail is a small indie place shaking up great drinks, and Lambs—yet another Michelin-starred restaurant—is a go-to for classic English cuisine with a modern twist. Get a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus ticket to get around easily and see more of Stratford. Before you go, pop in for a cream tea at Huffkins or Hathaways when you’re done with all the sweet shops, chocolatiers, bakeries, and tea shops.
