Known as Mardoowarra to its traditional custodians (including the Bunuba, Nyikina, Walmajarri, and Gooniyandi people), the river and its floodplains are sites of spiritual and cultural significance. It is also home to many native species, including acacia trees, bream, and fresh and saltwater crocodiles, and it’s one of the last places where the endangered freshwater sawfish can be found.
The river is a popular fishing and camping spot near both Broome and Derby. Travelers will have several opportunities to experience the Fitzroy River when embarking on multi-day tours of the Kimberley region, or during day tours of Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek national parks.
Crocodiles inhabit the Fitzroy River, so practice caution on and around the river and obey all warning signs.
If camping, set up your tent at least 160 feet (50 meters) from the edge of the water.
Never leave food or bait near the water, campsites, and boat ramps.
Stay hydrated and always carry plenty of drinking water, even in winter.
The Fitzroy River is located in the West Kimberly, accessible from Fitzroy Crossing, Broome, and Derby. It flows through Geikie Gorge and can also be seen at the Willare Crossing and the permanent Margaret River pool. Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park is a 20-minute drive north of Fitzroy Crossing and a 4.5-hour drive east of Broome.
The best time to visit the Kimberley region is during the southern hemisphere’s winter (or dry season), from June through August. Daytime temperatures range from warm to hot (but, unlike summer, not overwhelmingly hot) and are perfect for enjoying outdoor activities. Most boat tours on the Fitzroy River only run from May to October.
Dangu Geikie Gorge is one of the most accessible national parks in the Kimberley region. The gorge for which it is named was carved out by the Fitzroy River, which flows between its soaring limestone walls. Visitors can explore the park during a boat tour of the river.
