National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House

The Rochester house where noted suffragette Susan B. Anthony spent the last 40 years of her life, and where she was arrested in 1872 for voting, is both a national landmark and museum. The well-preserved home and site houses exhibits and artifacts related to her life and work and offers informative tours and interpretive programs.

The basics

Visitors can explore the house and museum on a guided docent-led tour, which covers all three stories of Anthony’s historic home. Highlights include the front parlor, where she was arrested in 1872, as well as the back parlor, study, dining room, and bedroom. Photos and other exhibits are available. The Monday Lecture series is held monthly, with guest lecturers speaking on topics inspired by Anthony’s life and work. The museum also hosts various programs for children, scouts, and adults.

How to get there

The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is located at 17 Madison Street and 19 Madison Street, west of downtown Rochester. By car, take the New York State Thruway (I-90) to I-490 (to the Plymouth Avenue or Broad Street/Plymouth Avenue exits). There is parking in the lot next to the visitor center and on the street. The museum can also be accessed by bus routes 4, 8, 24, and 28.

When to get there

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from mid-morning to late afternoon. The museum is closed on major holidays and for its annual birthday celebration in mid-February. Guided docent-led tours last around 45 to 60 minutes. Visitors should plan on at least one hour for visits.
