The basics

Visitors to the Grimsel Pass are sure to marvel at the varied scenery—from rugged, snow-capped peaks to crystal-clear reservoirs and lush green hillsides. An ideal destination for hikers during the warmer months; there are plenty of routes of varying levels of difficulty to choose from—including a hiking loop around the picturesque Gelmer Lake—reached from Handeck via the world’s steepest funicular.

For visitors on two wheels, the pass makes up one of Switzerland’s key national cycling routes and has been used by the Tour de Suisse. If cycling is considered too tame, opt for a more thrill-seeking canyoning experience that includes abseiling, zip-lining, and wild swimming—all led by a professional guide. Visitors can also choose to drive the route in the comfort of a car.

Visit the Village of Wengen

Situated a few hours’ drive north-west of the Grimsel Pass, the village of Wengen offers all the picture-postcard charm that’s to be expected from a traditional Swiss Alpine retreat. Timber chalet buildings sit among the lush hillsides, while Wengen’s car-free status further enhances its quaint feel. It’s recommended to park at nearby Lauterbrunnen and take the 5-minute train journey to reach Wengen. For spectacular photo opportunities of the panoramic views, take a trip up the aerial cableway to the summit of Männlichen.
