What To Expect

Mission San Luis Rey is among the largest of California's 21 Spanish missions, and it shows the significance of Spanish influence in the state's history.

Browse the museum at your own pace and see informative displays of Native American, Mexican, and Spanish artifacts. The mission is known for its sunken gardens, and archaeological and architectural features such as a wooden dome and cupola. It was once referred to as 'king of the missions.'

In the present day, the mission is both a retreat center, a home for Franciscan friars and has an active church with daily Mass at noon.

Viator made it very simple to purchase a ticket in advance. The Mission is piece of artestry restored from the splendor of the 1700's. So much history but also sadness in the evolution of abandonment and disrepair after the Spanish American War. This is a must see if you are visiting the area. It is definitely a place of reflection.
