Very interesting history regarding the family! Beautiful mansion and gardens! Love how they turned the ballroom in a cafe. The woodwork is amazing.
Amazing Castle
Joyce_R, Jan 2024
The castle tour was amazing and the grounds were beautiful. It was a little confusing following the grounds map as the plants/trees/shrubs aren’t numbered for the most part. But once you get turned around again it is nice.
A worthwhile experience.

I wasn’t expecting much but the castle was surprisingly detailed and in great condition. If possible, tag along with a tour guide to get the most out of it. Some detailed stories about the owners life told over several rooms really adds so much to the whole experience. Make the effort to go to the top of the tower too for some great panoramic views. Great value for money. Don’t miss it.
Interesting place.

It's more of a manor house than a castle in my view, but it was still very interesting and the gardens were quite pretty. Unfortunately the surrounding view was spoilt by fog.

Beautiful castle, we were able to tour it in a short period of time. We hired Taxi to show us the entire city.
Must See Attraction in Dunedin!
Rick_E, Feb 2023
This is an amazing castle nestled in the hills outside of Dunedin, NZ. The history surrounding the construction, family history, demise and abandonment and subsequent ongoing restoration is fascinating. Takes about 2 hours to tour. The view of the harbor and Dunedin in the distance from the Castle turret is spectacular!
Shocking

Great castle. Terrible customer service. Didn’t provide audio guides that we had paid for and never provided partial refund that they promised, despite repeated calls.
Renovated with a lot of love

The castle and the grounds look amazing after hard work of 2 generations. Really enjoyed it.
Unfortunately the shop staff were very inefficient and even challenging:
-one was working while the other was watching even though there was a line;
-the customer before me bought a toy for his daughter. The lady behind the counter didn’t know how to work the card reader. The poor dad couldn’t convince her that the purchase had been charged even after showing his CC activities on the bank app. I felt so sorry for him.
-when my items were checked out it was done in such a leisure manner that some folks behind me decided to put things back and not to wait.
Seeing inside the castle...

Seeing inside the castle and seeing info about the Empson's as she was a relative.
Going up to the top of the tower was a great experience on a perfect day weatherwise.

Hi John_S
Thank you for leaving us a review.
In September 2021 the Castle celebrated 150 years, as part of that celebration we commissioned the 'Behind the walls - the untold stories' exhibition. It explains a lot of what went on at the Castle between 1900 and 1967.
kind regards
Deborah

Nice day out for our family. Enjoyed the beautiful gardens and the historic displays as well. Most staff were pleasant and engaged with visitors

Delightful visit to this remarkable castle - gardens included - well laid out self guided tour - we enjoyed it thoroughly
DON'T USE VIATOR TO VISIT THIS SITE
Raewyn D, Jun 2019
It costs more to use VIator than the gate price. Viator wouldn't let me cancel and nor would they match the Best price guarantee they state they have. Be careful. I am very unhappy.
The site itself is worth the visit.

Didn't get to go due to been sold a ticket to castle entry only and no transport to get there or back. When we got to Dunedin we where told that it was to far for buses unless you already had that transport charged in your tour. We where traveling around via ship and had to make sure we could get back to our ship.was also told that you could confirm if a taxi would come back and get us,so that was a waste of money and so disappointed that I dint see the castle.
