I embarked on the “Picnic on Horseback in Rome” tour with high expectations, lured by the promise of stunning nature and delectable Roman cuisine. The tour began wonderfully, with our guide Alessia providing a five-star experience. Her knowledge, passion, and kindness created an atmosphere that was both educational and enjoyable as we traversed the breathtaking landscapes of the Riserva Naturale Statale del Litorale Romano.
The horseback riding experience was superb, catering to all skill levels, and made for a delightful escape from the city’s hustle. Alessia was the perfect host, ensuring everyone was comfortable, safe, and engaged.
However, the experience took a confusing turn when, contrary to the description, there was no picnic. Instead, Alessia’s husband led us to a local restaurant and left without explanation. The restaurant staff, seemingly more focused on the local police eating there simultaneously, left us feeling unwelcome and uncertain of the itinerary. The absence of clear communication was concerning, especially when it became evident that we were stranded without a pre-arranged return to the train station. The resulting inconvenience of arranging and paying 60 euro for our own Uber back to Rome, especially in inclement weather and at an additional significant expense, was not only unexpected but also quite distressing.
While the day started as one of the best tours, with Alessia’s outstanding guidance, it ended on a sour note. I would advise future participants to seek clarity on the day’s full itinerary, particularly regarding transportation arrangements after the horseback riding portion. Despite the enchanting ride, the oversight in planning and hospitality needs addressing to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience from start to finish.
