    What To Expect

    Climb aboard your comfortable, air-conditioned minibus at a central Sorrento location, or arrange for hotel pickup, before you relax during the scenic journey to Pompeii and Herculaneum, two ancient cities devastated by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. 

    Feel your excitement heighten as you approach the sites of the miraculously preserved, 2,000-year-old ruins and commence a guided tour of the Herculaneum area. Receive a fascinating introduction to the city and how it was buried under a sea of volcanic ash following Mt. Vesuvius’ unexpected eruption. 

    Next, travel onward to Pompeii, stopping for a revitalizing Italian lunch at a local restaurant along the way. Please see the Itinerary section for a sample menu. Sated, embark on a guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed ruins with your expert guide. 

    Delve into the encompassing intrigue of the ancient city destroyed by the mighty volcano; see excavations of ancient monuments and admire the perfectly preserved structure of Villa of Mysteries (Villa dei Misteri), so-called because of the frescoes, statues, and walls that sustained little damage during the eruption. 

    Suitably impressed, return to your vehicle and relax during the journey back to Sorrento, where the tour concludes.

    I was disappointed that...

    I was disappointed that we did not see the Amphitheatre in Pompeii. Although I was most interested in seeing the ancient ruins for their historical value, seeing where Pink Floyd filmed their masterpiece Echoes was on my bucket list and I was fully expecting that the amphitheater would be part of the visit. I would also recommend that all guests meet at a single point rather than having some picked up at their hotels whereas we and others had to find our way to the bus depot. Our return to Sorrento took an additional half-hour while a handful of the guests on the tour were dropped of at their hotels.
    So much destruction from one eruption.

    It was our last day in Italy and we didn’t want to miss seeing these towns. It was amazing to see how preserved the structures and towns were. The guide brought it to life.

    Excellent trip and superb guides. Cinzia was an excellent host with clear communication, detailed knowledge of the history and lots of fun! Lunch was nice with starter, pasta course and cake with a glass of wine. Overall a great way to see these sites in a day.

    If only there were more hours in the day to see everything! What we did see, we loved. Getting to see both places is well worth it, they are different enough for it to be really interesting.

    Good tour but I'd skip the lunch

    This trip was very informative, collection was on time and location was easy to find for pick up.Pompeii was very well guided and lots of information given during tour ,we then did lunch and continued on to the herculaneum. It would have been nice to take a 10 minute look around the market outside of pompeii but this wasn't offered and we went straight to the bus ,we were brought for a light lunch, to be honest I've had better lunches on tours ,the herculaneum was good I felt we didn't see it all ,we were given 15 mins at the end of this tour to get an ice cream or drink.then dropped back to collection point.

    This was such a good tour. Rafflelo was such a good guide, so informative and interesting. This tour enables you to see both Pompei and Herculaneum in a day with lunch! We had limited time in the Sorrento area so this was an ideal opportunity for us. Lunch was good. I would recommend this tour.

    Difficult to find bus @ parking lot with cruise ship buses, no guide with a sign. Driver today had a cold and coughed and sneezed on morning ride, possibly infecting all of us. Guide Ralph needs to carry something high so we can find him in crowd.

    Arranged pick up from our hotel which worked out great. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day which was educational for all ages. My daughter is 9 and the pace was fine. Very knowledgable guide and we really enjoyed the lunch which exceeded our expectations. We only saw a small part of the Pompeii site but enough to get an idea of life back then and the events of the earthquake and eruption.

    Excellent tour with knowledgeable guide. It was a very hot day but the pace was easy, and the lunch at a lovely restaurant, with great food, broke the day up nicely. Fascinating places. Pompei and Herculaneum are quite different, we were glad we chose to see both of them.

    Touring Pompeii is hard work

    Our guide was boring. He put us to sleep on the long bus ride from Sorrento to Pompeii. We got a late start and no one informed us we could have been picked up near our hotel. We waited in the bud park in Sorrento for an hour before joining the tour. We got to Pompeii by 10:30am by which time it was getting hot. Pompeii is all hard surface rubble with no place to sit. Our guide took us in a side entrance and we toured an amphitheater and area before reaching the Main Street. Pompeii is poorly signed and confusing as it all piles stone walls and rubble. Our guide kept us at a fast pace and we ran through the ruins, we barely got to stick our head in a feature before having to run to keep up with the group. The final visit was the Villa of the Mysteries. It could have been interesting but our guide narrated a confusing story and I have no clue what he was talking about. Had a decent lunch and then toured Herculaneum. Everyone was hot and tired by this point. Herculaneum is easier to understand but by this time everyone was flagging.

    Pompeii & Herculaneum are both fascinating & memorable. A must-see when in this area. Our guide Analisa was excellent, gave us lots of great information, was very positive & engaging. Lunch was rushed & it felt like the restaurant staff knew they weren't going to get a tip. A great day overall.

    It delivered on everything we were expecting. Our guide Fabiano was very informative. The meal was very good and well organized. The sights are amazing and give such a vivid glimpse into what life was like in that region 2,000 years ago. It's remarkable how advanced their civilization was.

    Just to see the grounds of ruins was breath taking itself. What happened to them was horrific. Amazed at what survived is another story itself. Our guide Cynthia was the best. Knowledgeable to the core. This should not be passed on when visiting the area.

    This is a must do trip! Fabulous experience made even better by our tour guide Laura. She was informative and entertaining, knowledgeable, and brought the the whole eruption experience to life. You could actually imagine living there before and what occurred right after the blast. She gives you plenty of time to “look and see” all of the artifacts etc. would do this trip again.
