Paddle a kayak to the magnificent Maori rock carvings on Lake Taupo with a half-day tour from Acacia Bay. You’ll learn the cultural significance behind the towering inscriptions, which were completed in 1980, and enjoy great views across the crystal-clear lake to the Tongariro Mountains. Approaching the Maori rock carvings by kayak means you can see them up close, passing native bush and tiny inlets, then floating right at the base of the cliff. Both morning and afternoon departures are available and beginning paddlers are welcome.

Great paddle with excellent, well informed guide. Good equipment and safety briefing. Coffee and muffin stop also highly enjoyable. But the absolute highlight is the carvings. Kayaking right upto them is easily the best way to see and experience them. Highly recommended

We had good weather - cloudy with some sun; we had a double kayak and wore spray skirts; our guide, Oliver, was kind, patient and provided us with some facts about the area; we had some water with waves and some flat water; we saw a cormorant holding its wings out to dry; we didn't stop to have a snack as the rocky area was too difficult to get to, so we ate back at the beach; snack was a muffin and a hot drink; Oliver said he would share photos he took with us, but he hasn’t (yet); we would have enjoyed more variety in the kayaking as we didn’t go into any of the inlets to see local animals - we kayaked in and back the same way; as we have kayaked many times, we felt we could have done this paddle without a guide.
Morning kayak of eco area.

It was early in the morning so not much traffic. Our guide was well versed in the biology and history of the area. The water was serene.
Go for it.

Wonderful guides, good workout, beautiful scenery. It was a bit harder than I expected — it’s 10 km there and back. But we turned on the motor for part of the return trip.

The trip should have been canceled as it rain for half the trip. Although it was nice to see the carvings, the trip was very uncomfortable and wet! The photos that were taken was of poor quality

Pleasant kayaking tour. Guide was very knowledgeable. Do note: weather will dictate the lake's waves and effort required in this experience.
Well worth it

It was a great trip. I learned loads and had a great time! The guides Legend and Joey were great! Legend particularly, helped us to keep going at moments , when our muscles ached!! It was brilliant and when we come again, I would do another kayaking trip. It was great to have such an experienced guide in, Legend.
Delightful kayak trip with great views

We took the kayak trip up to the Maori rock carvings, and had a delightful time. A fairly easy kayak trip up, with lots of stops for historical, cultural, and geologic discussion, arriving at the impressive rock carvings. There we had a snack provided, and enjoyed some time for swimming. Our guide, Legend, was great--friendly and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the trip and absolutely would recommend it to others. If you're afraid of your fitness level for kayaking, I wouldn't worry too much. It's a great trip.
This is really about being eco friendly

We had gloriously sunny weather, two great guides and good company for this trip. There is a lot of history to hear and lovely scenery to be seen. Our guides were very knowledgeable and very good at making conversation which makes life a lot easier when paddling. Well done on this tour thank you.
Highly recommend!

Amazing Kayak Tour with a fantastic Guide!

We were the only two people on this tour. Our guide Legend was legendary! He was great and informative and very friendly. He mad us feel very comfortable and safe on the water. He was the type of guide that we would want to hang out with even outside the tour. He even gave us fantastic tips about the local area. We would kayak anytime or take any other tour with Legend.

A great way to explore Lake Taupo
PuiChi_I, Jan 2020
It was a great way to explore Lake Taupo by kayaking and we could reach out to the Maori Rock Carving. We could come close and took picture. The kayaks were in very good condition. They had steer controlled by foot, and even a small motor that helped us to catch up with the team and saved our energy in return way! It was a small group tour with 8 persons in 4 kayaks. A good size of grouping. It was fun.

Hi There. Its great to hear you had a fun tour out to the Maori Carvings - the motors definitely do help to make the trip a little bit more relaxing. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.
Best kayaking tour i've ever been...
Wanyi L, Dec 2017
Best kayaking tour i've ever been to. Lake Taupo by itself was magnificent and the rock carvings were really worth taking a look. The guide was very knowledgable and shared many local maori tales with us. The pace was just right, and the rest stop after reaching the rock carvings was very welcomed as it gave us more energy to continue on our return trip.
