What To Expect

Your Doubtful Sound cruise begins with hotel pickup in Te Anau for the coach journey to Manapouri Lake. After a brief boat ride over the lake’s vivid waters, board another bus and cross over Wilmot Pass, stopping to view the Fiordland's dense rainforest and alpine moss gardens with a glimpse of Doubtful Sound in the distance.

Continue on to Deep Cove, where you board a spacious catamaran for your boat tour of Doubtful Sound, part of the UNESCO–listed Fiordland National Park and ten times larger than Milford Sound. Amid this pristine wilderness, whose deep waters are sometimes vivid blue-green and sun-drenched and other times shrouded in mist, you find a rugged landscape of granite peaks and cascading waterfalls.

Soak up views of the dramatic topography as your skipper provides insightful commentary and points out South Island wildlife, such as bottlenose dolphins that frequently swim alongside the vessel. Search for rare Fiordland penguins in their natural habitat and New Zealand fur seals often seen basking on the rocks.

End with the return trip to Manapouri, where you’re transferred back to your Te Anau hotel.

Wonderful green mountains with waterfalls, seals on rocks and even a short trip into the Tasman Sea. This trip is value for money with a coach trip to Lake Manapouri, a boat trip across the lake, a scenic coach trip across Wilmot Pass and then the wonderful Doubtful Sound. Excellent boat and friendly, helpful crew.

Wonderful experience

A wonderful day providing an insight into nature’s rawness and beauty at its very best. Tour facilities were of a very high standard along with great commentary.
Silence is memorable
Richard_V, Apr 2024
The moments of silence on Doubtful sound on a perfectly beautiful day. I was able to just focus both inwards and outwards on the beauty of this part of New Zealand
Lovely!

Very satisfying full-day experience! Don’t force me to say more—as you just forced me to do or I will never fill out another evaluation from you. Shame on you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t miss Doubtful Sound

Beautiful scenery and commentary! We started our day with a van ride to Manapouri, then a 45 minute boat ride across the lake and a coach bus to the dock to catch our boat to the fiords! Great sites all along our journey!!A definite must-see in the South Island!
Remote, scenic and wildlife + awesome staff
Mikhala_S, Feb 2024
Excellent staff that were very knowledgeable, smooth travels on the route to the sound, and we got to see fit seals AND dolphins! Only two other boats seen the whole day!
Fantastic day cruise

A must do. We preferred it to Milford Sound.

The tour is well orchestrated and the views are simply spectacular. It’s an easy, relaxing and fun day. Highly recommended!
Great day out.

Wow! What a great day. Seamless efficiency from start to finish. Friendly and knowledgeable drivers and staff. Doubtful Sound was stunning.
Trip is not worth the price with the boat being overpacked and uncomfortable.
Jason_L, Jan 2024
The price, description, and picture of this tour made it seem like it would be a relaxed experience. When we got to the tour a much inferior boat was used and it was completely packed. I basically was not able to sit with the person I was traveling with due to the boat being so packed. I then had to absolutely sprint to one of the boats to be able to find seats together. For this price, I would not expect that type of service. I would recommend a different tour, possibly a small group going to Milford Sound rather than this overpacked trip.
Fantastic day with amazing views

Such an amazing experience and very well organised. The moment of coming over the Wilmot Pass to see Doubtful Sound was simply breathtaking. Being on the water with towering cliff around us was a great experience

Fjord experience
Andrew_W, Mar 2020
The handling of the 135 people in 3 coaches was perfect from pick up to drop off. The boat was not full & gave ample room to move about inside & on deck. We had excellent weather went out to the Tasman where we saw penguins. Really excellent experience
All of it
Barbara_B, Feb 2020
Smoothly run and highly enjoyable trip. Quite emotional to ‘hear the silence’ when the engines were turned off, I would recommend this trip. One word of caution....we were told to be at the centre by 6 .45 to be picked up at 7.00. Having boarded the coach at said time we then did a tour of Te Anau motels etc to pick others up only to return to the centre at 8.00 to collect more people. So 1 hour on a coach when we could have had an extra sleep!!
Doubtful sound baby seals.

Such a beautiful trip. Very well organized. We were booked for Milford Sound and had to change to Doubtful Sound. So glad we made the change. We stayed in Te Anau and had a quick bus ride, then a beautiful boat ride on the lake, another quick bus ride and then Doubtful Sound. It was a little rainy, but well worth the money and time.
Bucket list must do
Connie_E, Feb 2020
We absolutely loved the trip! At first we were hesitant about taking the tour due to weather conditions. There was a bit of wind and rain which only added a bit of drama and mystery to the experience. All the staff were informative and courteous. We highly recommend this tour.
Incredible Doubtful Sound Cruise
kevin, Feb 2020
The ship, the crew and the entire experience way exceeded our expectations. We were fortunate that our weather was extremely beautiful and even the Captain mentioned how calm the Tasman Sea was. We saw fur seals and penguins. The "Sounds of Silence" when the Captain turned the engines off brought us to tears. I am a retired professional travel writer and yet words and photos can not describe this excursion... it must be experienced.
Doubtful Sound day trip.
Alan_T, Feb 2020
Absolutely incredible experience. The scenary was fantastic all the way from Manapour to the mouth of the point where the the Sound enters the sea. The light rain that we had on part of the journey did not spoil the experience. Keep up the great work Real Journeys.
Spectacular Journey
Rosemary_H, Jan 2020
This was a fabulous experience, well organised, excellent guides and transport. Of course, the scenery was the highlight, spectacular! The highlight was when they stopped the boat in a quiet spot and asked the passengers to be silent for a few minutes. It was a very special few minutes of peace and tranquillity.
