On the Cleddau River, the gushing water and weathered rocks of the Chasm reflect the forces of nature in the Fiordland area of New Zealand. The return walk from the parking lot is about a quarter of a mile (400 meters), and is an ideal spot to stretch your legs on the journey between Milford Sound and the Homer Tunnel.
The track includes two footbridges with views of a series of powerful falls, surrounded by moss-laden forest. Day tours to Milford Sound often make a quick stop at the Chasm, and independent travelers can easily stop here while driving around the area.
The Chasm parking lot is on State Highway 94, about a 90-minute drive from Te Anau town, and just 10 minutes from both Milford Sound and the Homer Tunnel through the mountains.
It often rains in the Fiordland National Park, so there’s no need to wait for a sunny day to enjoy this attraction. In fact, the damp forest and rushing water is even more spectacular when it’s raining.
