Overview

Learn more about Japanese culture and cuisine during a small-group sweet-making class in the fashionable Harajuku neighborhood. This was such a wonderful experience making delicious Japanese sweets and taking part in a traditional tea ceremony. Hana was a wonderful instructor and a delightful person to get to know! The sweets we made were so pretty you almost didn’t want to eat them. I would highly recommend this experience!

Fun and memorable experience

We really enjoyed making the nerikiri and learning about the tea ceremony. Hana was a skilled and friendly teacher. We started by picking a few designs based on Hana's advice on what might be most beginner-friendly, and then made them using ingredients that she had prepared and portioned out for each individual for convenience. Making the nerikiri consisted of basic assembly, gentle hand molding, and use of a few wooden/bamboo tools to imprint specific features. It takes a bit of a delicate touch to get a refined product and we weren't always successful, but we had a lot of fun throughout the process and honestly found our more humorous outcomes to be more endearing in a way. Afterwards, we participated in a tea ceremony that was accompanied by a variety of snacks. Very cool to learn about all of the nuances of that process. Highly recommend as an overall fun, hands-on, and educational experience.

My husband and I took this lesson! It was very fun. We made 4 different Nerikiri, learned how to perform the tea ceremony, and tried several Japanese treats! The instructors English was very good, so definitely feel welcome to book this if you don't speak any Japanese!

Our family of four (2 adults, and kids ages 14 and 10) loved this experience. The location is great, lots to do around it. It was fun to be in our host’s lovely home. We learned to make very beautiful sweets and could choose from a variety of styles to suit wach of our personalities. Highly recommend!

Hana was an amazing host! Very patient, great product and instructions. Finished our time off with a traditional tea ceremony including other Japanese sweets and snacks. Hana’s English is very good so we were able to ask lots of questions about Japanese culture as well. I would highly recommend Hana’s class!

Peaceful time making sweets

Hana is a great teacher and very patient. I love how she teach us the basics and then let us be creative with the last piece! After making the sweets, we make some matcha tea and eat some other sweets she so kindly offers. It's a very peaceful and fun experience. I hope I'm able to recreate these sweets in my country ^^

Thank you so much for a great afternoon of making Japanese sweets! We got to make four sweets total, including one that we got to create ourselves. She was very welcoming and talkative and spoke great English, helping us when we needed it. At the end, she showed us how to make matcha and we enjoyed a variety of traditional Japanese delicacies. I didn't actually attend the class since there was a maximum of 4 people so I signed up my wife and 3 daughters. They all gave this experience and the host glowing reports. When the host found out that it was for my family, she offered to let me watch from the sidelines, but I turned it down because I already had plans to go to a cafe and get some stuff done.

When I first arrived and saw the samples, I was intimidated - they all looked so cute and dainty, and I didn't think I'd be able to make one nearly half as nice. BUT I had an amazing teacher! She had everything prepped, her instructions were clear, her examples were fluid and easy to follow. Had to trust the process, but with her guidance, I managed to make some adorbable pieces! Easy to find location, wonderful class, and an all round warm and fun experience. I'd recommend it to solo travelers or a small group of friends. You can eat what you make!- an absolute win!

Hana was so kind and wonderful. We came early and she accommodated us by taking the class early with us. We were lucky to have her all to ourselves so we talked about Japan and Los Angeles (she's been) and she gave us great tips for when we come back in 2025. Such a delightful experience! We made four sweets—two designs that the host pre-selected, one design that we chose from her examples which we made together as a group, and then one design that we each made individually. In the attached photos, the two flowers were pre-selected, we did the dogs as a group, and we each got to come up with and make our own designs after that. The host was super funny, and the experience was so much fun! The sweets were very tasty too. The tea ceremony was neat, and we got some other snacks for that as well. Would definitely recommend this to anyone interested!
