The basics

Spanning over half the length of the River Torrens, the trail is well-made, mostly flat, and largely asphalt, lined with eucalyptus (gum trees) and reeds. It runs under most major roads and offers a range of playgrounds, picnic spots, and even the chance to feed ducks. A cycle tour makes for a great adventure as you follow the river all the way to the Southern Ocean, but it’s also possible to walk the far end of the trail from Adelaide Zoo: it’s about 7.5 miles (12 kilometers).

How to get there

Most walkers join the trail at Adelaide Zoo or Adelaide Festival Centre: The Festival Centre is just a 5-minute walk from Adelaide Railway Station. The easiest way for travelers to enjoy the cycle route is on a tour that provides transport at both ends.

When to get there

Adelaide summers can be savagely hot, with temperatures rising as high as 116° F (46.5° C). Spring and fall (September–November and March–May) are better times for a long hike than high summer, and the trail should be less crowded then, too.
