Arusha trip ideas
Visitors to Mount Meru are rewarded not only with expansive views of the surrounding area, including the peak of Kilimanjaro, but can also expect to spot plenty of indigenous wildlife during their treks. The still-active volcano draws in hundreds of birds and a few different monkey species, while Arusha National Park below is home to all sorts of creatures, from giraffes to elephants. Guided treks of Mount Meru range from day hikes to multinight tours, including tent accommodation.
While Mount Meru is an excellent alternative to Kilimanjaro, it’s also a great place to train for a longer Kilimanjaro trek.
Wear clothes in neutral khaki, tan, green, and beige hues to blend in better with your surroundings.
Insect and sun repellants are crucial, as are comfortable, broken-in shoes.
The trails on Mount Meru are not wheelchair-accessible.
Mount Meru is located inside Arusha National Park, about a 45-minute drive from Arusha or 80 minutes from Moshi. If you plan to hike the mountain, you'll want to go with a guide. Multi-night and day tours generally include round-trip transportation from area hotels.
The ideal time to go on a Mount Meru trekking trip is during the dry season, which starts in June and continues into October. You'll get more crowds this time of year in Arusha and the area's parks, but Mount Meru is usually not too bogged down with visitors.
If you want to take in views of Mount Meru but don’t necessarily want to hike it, consider taking a safari to Arusha National Park instead. This compact park is popular due to its proximity to Arusha. It has large populations of black-and-white colobus monkeys and Maasai giraffes, recognizable by their characteristically irregular spot pattern.
