Alexanderplatz has been an important meeting point since the Middle Ages. It served as a cattle market, a military parade square and training area, and, finally, a cosmopolitan center from the 1920s to the present.

Alexanderplatz is one of the most central points in Berlin. The iconic Fernsehturm, or TV Tower, is located in the plaza, and the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Museum Island is a 10-minute walk away. You can reach the square via commuter trains S3, S5, S7, S9; metro lines U2, U5, and U8; and numerous buses. There is hardly any parking nearby, so it is not recommended to drive to this area.
Alexanderplatz is always a bustling hub filled with locals and tourists. It features a number of markets throughout the year, most notably the Christmas Market, and becomes filled with stalls selling food, candy, gifts, and more. Summer in Berlin tends to be crowded, so visiting during the spring and fall shoulder months is recommended.
Since Alexanderplatz was the center of East Berlin, most of the buildings and art surrounding the square are from the socialist era. The former Centrum department store, the World Time Clock by Erich John, and the Fountain of International Friendship are just a few remnants from the Cold War that are present in the square.
