Australian Parliament House

The basics
Visitors to the Australian Parliament House get to see democracy in action, as both the House of Representatives and Senate meet here. Visitors can take free guided tours of the complex, and if parliament is in session, sit and watch from public viewing galleries in both chambers.
As one of Australia’s most recognizable landmarks, the Parliament House is featured on just about every sightseeing tour in Canberra, including guided day trips and overnight visits from Sidney. These tours typically stop at the Australian War Memorial, National Museum, and the Lodge (home of the Prime Minister) as well.
Sunny Canberra
The sun was shinning and we had a wonderful experience in this beautiful city. Neil was a great guide and his wealth of knowledge was extensive. Highlights were of course the Parliament buildings and the War Memorial.

Things to know before you go
- The Australian Parliament House is a must-see for first time visitors and those interested in politics.
- Be prepared to pass through a security screening to enter the building.
- Keep a valid photo ID with you throughout your visit, particularly for behind-the-scenes tours.
- Photography is permitted in public areas of the building, but prohibited in the chambers when parliament is in session.
- All public areas of Parliament House are fully accessible to wheelchairs.
How to get there
It’s possible to walk or bike to Capital Hill from Canberra City Centre, but you can also catch an ACTION bus to Federation Mall or ride the free Culture Loop shuttle. Parking is often limited when parliament is in session.
When to get there
Parliament House is open to visitors daily through the year, but closed on Christmas. Exact hours vary depending on when parliament is sitting; generally, the hours are Monday through Thursday from mid-February to late June and mid-August to mid-December.
Old Parliament House
The Old Parliament House is now home to the Museum of Australian Democracy, a great place to visit to get some context for what you’re seeing. The collection includes items the Old Parliament House used prior to its closure in 1988. An Oral History collection recounts stories from the people who worked in the building.
