Beyond hosting international bands and musicians like Rihanna, Bon Jovi, and Madonna, the Millennium Stadium—which rebranded as the Principality Stadium in 2016 but is still commonly referred to by its former name—also welcomes World Rally Championships and, on occasion, UEFA Champions League Finals. The best way to experience the Millennium Stadium is at one of its many events, although travelers pressed for time can enjoy the magnificent building from the outside on a hop-on hop-off bus tour of the city. The Millennium Stadium is situated right in the center of Cardiff, alongside the River Taff and just a 5-minute walk from Cardiff Central Train Station. There is both onsite and nearby parking available, although for most Cardiff-based travelers, the Millennium Stadium is easily accessible on foot or by public transport.
If you can get tickets, game days—especially rugby game days—are the best times to visit, although football matches also lend a certain atmosphere to the stadium and surrounds. Alternatively, get tickets for an upcoming concert of your choice, or take a guided tour from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 5pm, or on Sundays from 10:15am to 4pm.
Given the Millennium Stadium’s advantageous position in the center of the city, there are many options for travelers who want to book-end a tour of the grounds or grab a pre-game drink. Try some Welsh craft beers at Tiny Rebel or Zerodegrees, two brewpubs just minutes from the main entrance. Or, explore the boutiques, delis, and coffee shops in Cardiff’s many nearby Victorian Arcades.
