The Hall of Opium Museum is a staple of most Golden Triangle tours, which save you the hassle of traveling between dispersed attractions independently. Most tours depart from Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai and tend to combine a stop at the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) with a boat ride on the Khong River, from which you can see where the three countries intersect. Some tours cross the border and spend a few hours in either Myanmar or Laos.
The Hall of Opium Museum is located within the Golden Triangle Park on the banks of the Mekong River. The easiest way to reach the park is using your own car or with transport included on a day trip; however, you can take a bus from Chiang Rai to Mae Sai—which takes around 90 minutes—before boarding a songthaew (shared taxi) to the park.
The museum is open from the early morning until mid-afternoon from Tuesday to Friday; it's closed on Mondays.
In addition to the Hall of Opium Museum, the Golden Triangle Park is home to Wat Phra That Pu Khao, a hilltop temple that’s believed to date back to the 8th century. If you persevere with the steep hike to the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Golden Triangle and the island of Don Sao, a Laotian island that you can reach by longtail boat from Golden Triangle Park.
