Curitiba trip ideas
A city symbol and one of its most imposing landmarks, Curitiba’s Cathedral is recognizable for its soaring towers and butter-yellow facade. Pope John Paul II, who visited the city in 1980, granted the now 130-year-old icon the title of minor basilic. Local and visiting worshipers attend mass services during the week, and you can visit independently. Restored in 2012, the landmark is a highlight of Curitiba tours, from bike tours to private excursions.
The cathedral hosts free Portuguese-language tours once a month; register in advance to join.
If you visit for a church service, be respectful of worshipers and avoid talking loudly or taking flash photography.
Dress respectfully in this practicing Catholic church, covering your knees and shoulders.
The Curitiba Cathedral is at 31 Rua Barão do Serro Azul, near Tiradentes Square (Praça Tiradentes), among the city center’s most important public plazas. Numerous local bus lines area serve the area. You can also get there on foot or via taxi and rideshare services.
The Curitiba Cathedral is open to visitors daily, generally from morning until early evening, with some variation throughout the week. Holy masses are held twice daily throughout the week and three times on Sunday. Check its calendar in advance before you visit.
Once you’ve visited Curitiba Cathedral, continue to one of the city’s most important historical highlights, located nearby. The Historical Center of Curitiba Largo da Ordem (Centro Histórico de Curitiba Largo da Ordem) is the site of the city's founding in the 17th century. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination with colorful, historic buildings, Igreja da Ordem (the oldest church in the city), and a Sunday food and antiques fair.
