Mindil Beach

The Gardens, Darwin, Northern Territory, 0820

The basics

Sun-seekers head to Mindil Beach to stroll and sunbathe, although it’s best to avoid swimming—the waters around Darwin are known for their crocodiles and jellyfish. Pack a picnic and stick around to watch the sunset from the shore, a favorite pastime among locals. Explore the tree-lined parks of the Mindil Beach Reserve, which stretches along the coast; or visit the Mindil Beach Casino Resort, which has a day spa, lagoon pool, and a huge casino. During the dry season, the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, held right by the beachside, are one of the city’s most popular attractions.

When to get there

The sun shines all year-round in Darwin, but it can be unbearably hot on the beach during the wet season (November to March), so visit early or late in the day, and avoid sunbathing during the hottest periods. The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are typically held from April to October, and most travelers time their visit to watch the sunset and enjoy dinner at the markets.
