Tapsa Temple

The basics

While the Tapsa Temple’s pagodas are the main draw for tourists, it’s hard to overlook the temple’s setting. A daunting cliff backs one side of the temple. Reaching it involves traveling through the forest past one of several small local lakes. Tapsa Temple is often included as a stop on multi-day tours of South Korea on the way to Jeonju. Most visitors need a few hours at the temple or more time to hike.

How to get there

Tapsa Temple is located among the mountains east of Jeonju in Jinan County. To reach the temple, take a bus from Jeonju to Jinan and then board the regular local bus to the Maisan bus stop, a 20-minute walk from the temple. The quickest and least complicated way to get there is to get a rental car and drive 30 minutes to the temple from Jeonju.

When to get there

Autumn is the ideal time to visit Tapsa Temple, as red, orange, and yellow leaves decorate Maisan Mountain and the countryside. Mid-October is generally when the leaves change color and is often the busiest time to visit the area. Spring is a great time to visit Tapsa Temple, thanks to its cherry blossoms and the nearby Maisan Cherry Blossom Festival.

Temples of Maisan Provincial Park

Because of its unique pagodas and compelling story, Tapsa Temple is the most well-known of Maisan Mountain’s temples. However, to visit Tapsa Temple, you often have to pass at least one other temple in the provincial park. Eunsusa Temple, which dates from the 1300s, is not far from Tapsa Temple and is home to a rare species of pear tree. To the west, Geumdangsa Temple is known for its pretty cherry and magnolia trees.
