A complex of 300 limestone caves, South Africa's Cradle of Humankind is one of the most significant archaeological and anthropological sites in the world. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has produced an extensive human and animal fossil record, including a nearly-complete hominin skull dating back more than 2 million years.
This is an amazing day trip for anyone visiting the Johannesburg/Pretoria area. Shane and Shan are amazing and informative hosts that allowed me to make the most out of this trip. The rhino and lion park is a great way to see many of the animals that can be difficult to spot on a traditional safari. The Cradle of Humankind is a must for anyone interested in human history or archaeology and South Africa’s contributions to our understanding of evolutionary biology.
We spent a great day with Shane and enjoyed our tours. Shane offered lots of great advice and was very knowledgeable. The Lesedi Cultural Village was the highlight of the day. The drums were fun, the dancing was great and the food was delicious. The Maropeng museum was interesting but much of it seemed focused on a younger crowd.
Overall it was a pleasant day and Shane was very helpful.
Thank you Shane we had a wonderful day. We saw all the animals and were able to take some amazing photos. We really enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend this trip during a long layover in Johannesburg
Enjoyed our tour and our friendly and very knowledgeable guide, Jason. Would recommend a two-hour lion safari option rather than just one hour. Too
many animals to see in just one hour! Disappointed that the caves were closed in the Cradle of Humanity part of the tour. The Maropeng museum was very interesting, though it needs some updating and TLC.
Shane was a fun and informative guide for the day. The Lesedi village was very enjoyable. We toured 4 villages, learned some greetings, saw dances and drumming and had a tasty lunch. Shane answered questions about the area, took photos for us and generally made sure our day was fun. Would recommend him and this excursion as an alternative way to experience the area other than through another game drive.
My husband and I had a great day on this tour with Jason. He shared so much history with us as we were driving. We had a bit of a drive to the Cradle of Humankind from our hotel and it was great to have a true guide with us sharing things with us instead of just a driver. He pointed out things along the drive and answered all the questions we had. Sadly the caves at the cradle of humankind were closed so we only saw the museum, but Jason did inform us of that a few days before and we therefore were able to have additional time at the Lion Safari. Jason handled everything with the tickets and left us with a museum tour group and was waiting for us when we walked out. When then went to the Lion Safari again Jason handled everything and we just walked right onto the tour group vehicle for the Lion Park and he was again waiting for us right when we got off so we felt well taken care of. We had a great lunch together with him and another great drive home learning more about the areas we were driving back through. I would have much preferred seeing the caves rather than the museum for the cradle of humankind but that was just bad luck for us as the caves are currently closed due to flooding that happened in Dec. The Lion Park was such a neat experience to see some lion families. I would say it was somewhere in between a zoo and a true nature reserve ... the park is sectioned off for different animals so that there isn't competition with male lions and such, so there was a lot of driving in between gated off sections, and the animals are fed - they do not hunt. But we weren't' sure if we were going to get to see lions on our safari later in our trip in South Africa so it was a great opportunity to see them close up. Because we were able to do the longer tour at the park we also got to see cheetahs, wild dogs, and some caged hyenas.
Wonderful day! Willem was very knowledgeable about the areas we visited and more broadly about the area. He helped us navigate entries, tickets, lunch and had fresh water for us. My mother uses a Walker and he was so accommodating helping her navigate the sites. We had a wonderful time and very cool to visit these ancient sites.
I really enjoyed my day. I learned so much and everyone was so welcoming and helpful. Definitely recommend the tour and tour guide. Communication is excellent and Shane’s service was exceptional! Highly recommend him!
