Thomas Town is located in southern Malaysia’s Puteri Harbour, an entertainment development just an hour by road from Singapore. The harbor complex pairs Thomas Town with the equally kid-friendly Hello Kitty Town and caters to families with a range of restaurants, accommodation options, and retail stores. Puteri Harbour is located about 14 miles (22 kilometers) from Johor Bahru and 207 miles (333 kilometers) from Kuala Lumpur. While many travelers visit from nearby Singapore, it’s also possible to travel by bus from Johor Bahru Sentral station. Note that it’s not possible to take a taxi from Singapore, as they’re not permitted to cross the international border in either direction.
Thomas Town is typically open Wednesday through Monday from midmorning until evening, and also on Tuesdays during school and public holidays. Live shows take place several times a day; check the schedule upon arrival to avoid disappointment. Weekends and school holidays are particularly busy with domestic visitors, so aim for a weekday visit if possible.
LEGOLAND® Malaysia is another family-friendly destination just minutes away from Puteri Harbour, while Singapore is also a hot spot for theme parks and attractions geared at younger travelers. Located on Sentosa Island in Singapore, the indoor theme park KidZania is a simulation city in which children can learn from interactive experiences—kids can try out different professions, earn money in the form of KidZos, and explore the “city” with minimal input from adults. Aside from KidZania, Singapore’s elaborate zoo is a good option for children and adults alike.
