Whether you’re planning to join a guided tour of the Lake District’s highlights, or explore at your own pace, you’re sure to pass through the town of Bowness. It’s well known as a jumping-off point for the region’s many attractions, but that shouldn’t overshadow the joys of the town itself. A visit to the World of Beatrix Potter Museum (dedicated to the famous children’s book author), the 15th-century St. Martin’s Church, and Blackwell historic house all make worthwhile stops.
For those more interested in the lakes themselves, there are a number of boat tours to take advantage of, including a historic steamship ride on Lake Windermere. You can also hire your own rowing boat on several of the lakes, or take part in water sports activities such as waterskiing and wakeboarding.
Bowness is located on the banks of Lake Windermere, in the Lake District, Cumbria. Windermere train station (with connections to London) is a short distance away, and buses connect the station with the town. It’s easy to drive here too, and there’s also ample car parking in the town. Cycling is another popular way to get around in the Lake District and there are several bike hire outfits in town.
Bowness is an enjoyable place to visit all year round, although the weather is best in spring, summer, and fall. The town can get very busy with tourists during summer vacation, so plan your visit just outside of July and August for a quieter experience.
Set out for a classic Lake District hike in the Borrowdale Valley. Along the way you’ll take in grass-covered peaks, riverside pastures, and panoramic views over some of the lakes that give the region its name. Experienced hikers can take up the challenge of climbing Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.
