Although many walking tours of Lima pass through the neighborhood, few if any stop at the National Afro-Peruvian Museum. As such, it’s best to build in time to visit independently, before or after a tour of the city’s historic center. Once there, immerse yourself in exhibits dedicated to Peru’s history as a slave trading center and the huge influence African peoples have had on the country’s gastronomy, music, dance, language, and literature over the centuries.
This is a must for visitors interested in learning about Afro-Peruvian culture and history in Lima.

The National Afro-Peruvian Museum is possibly not entirely wheelchair accessible, due to the historic nature of the building.
Situated just a few blocks from the Lima Cathedral in the Cercado de Lima (Center) neighborhood of the city, the Afro-Peruvian Museum is easily accessible on foot for travelers in the downtown area. If you’re coming from farther afield, private vehicles are typically the most convenient option.
The National Afro-Peruvian Museum is typically open from 9am to 5pm daily, with the exception of Sundays. It usually closes for an hour over lunch. Although rarely busy, arrive early to enjoy the place by yourself. Lima itself is rarely hot, cold, or wet, instead enjoying a temperate climate all year round.
Downtown Lima has a number of nearby attractions well worth a visit, most of which are included in walking tours of the city. Don’t miss the Lima Cathedral on Plaza de Armas; make time to stop by City Hall (Palacio Municipal); and take a tour of the catacombs which lie beneath the Church and Convent of St. Francis.
