The basics

Visitors pay a fee to enter 19th-century St. George’s Church—the map was discovered during its construction—and view the surviving, main fragment of the mosaic in its apse. The map shows the key biblical sites of the Holy Land at the time; including Jerusalem, complete with several still-identifiable streets and gates; alongside other towns, religious symbols, and the Dead Sea.

The Madaba Map is featured on many full- and half-day tours from Amman, usually alongside places such as the Dead Sea, Mt. Nebo, and Bethany, Jesus’ reputed baptism site; as well as on tours from the Dead Sea and Aqaba. It’s also included on many multi-day Jordan tours that cover other locations such as Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, and Jerash; and on itineraries that showcase both Jordan’s and Israel’s highlights.

Excellent guide and driver
Our trip, thanks to our guide and driver, was excellent snd very interesting. Thanks to the advice received and flexibility offered, we could explore Madaba in detail, not just limiting ourselves to one church, which most of the tours do. We got good advice to skip places for which weather was not adequate and enjoy longer Mount Nebo and River Jordan. Many thanks!

How to get there

The Church of St. George is on K. Talal Street in old Madaba and is easily reached by cab or foot from the town center. As local public transport is limited, the easiest way to visit from Amman is via a tour or rental car: just follow Route 35, known as the King’s Highway, southwest from the city to Madaba.

When to get there

The church opens daily year-round, with shorter hours on Fridays and Sundays. As it can get busy with tour groups, it’s wise to arrive early or late in the day to avoid any crowds. The best time to visit, weather-wise, is during spring or fall, when Jordan’s temperatures are pleasantly mild.

Other Must-See Mosaics in Madaba

Most tourists catch a glimpse of the Madaba Map before quickly taking their leave of the town. If possible, take the time to see more earlier mosaics at the nearby Madaba Archaeological Park I. Highlights include the Church of the Virgin Mary’s stunning geometric mosaic, and the mosaics of the 6th-century Hippolytus Hall, which show dancing classical figures, animals, birds, and flowers in what are joyful celebrations of life.
